Ron Marlett lowering the USCGC Winnebago's small boat.

1970

After graduating from boot camp in Alameda, California, Ron Marlett was transferred to the 14th Coast Guard District in Hawaii and stationed aboard the USCGC Winnebago. In this picture, Ron is participating in lowering the Winnebago's port small boat while at Ocean Sation Victor; a designated area halfway between Midway Atoll and Japan. Ron also trained to be the small boat's bowman. Small boat drill was practiced every day when the Winnebago was at sea so that the crew could easily perform their duties when providing assistance to merchant seamen in need. As the bowman during heavy seas, Ron remembered how the Winnebago would dissapear from the boat crew's sight when the small boat was in a deep trough.
