Ron Marlett visiting Monterey, California after graduating from boot camp.

1970

After Ron Marlett's graduation from boot camp, the Marletts drove home on the Pacific Coast Highway. One of the places they stopped at was Monterey where Vera took pictures of the family. In this picture, Ron looks out to sea at one of the Monterey vistas and contemplates his lifelong career with the Coast Guard. He believed that the Coast Guard was going to be an exciting life just like the adventures he read about in books and saw in the movies. Ron did have the adventure he imagined onboard the Winnebago, but his true calling to become an artist came forth and after six months in the Coast Guard, Ron began counting the days to his discharge and the beginning of his art career.
