Rockpile by Ron Marlett.

Rockpile 10" x 8" November 30, 2008

One of Marlett's smallest seascapes; the piece was named after a surfing spot in Laguna Beach, California. The right-to-left diagonal movement can be seen with the brush marks as well as the scenery. The palm treetops in the foreground create another diagonal line that moves in the opposite direction from the main scene. The combination of palm trees and vegetation create a dark wedge shape that cradles the lightly rendered background. Marlett's interest in developing geometric shapes from the natural scenery that he paints began with his realistic style landscapes in 1985.
