Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California.

1970

Ron Marlett Joined the Coast Guard on February 9, 1970 and was sent to Government Island in Alameda, California for his basic training. Government Island was originally an artificial island created in 1913 by a dredging project that extended the Oakland Estuary to San Leandro Bay. In 1926, the Coast Guard began constructing Base 11 on Government Island. When the United States entered World War Two in 1941, the Coast Guard turned Base 11 into a training center. In 1982, twelve years after Ron graduated from boot camp, the Coast Guard moved its training facilities to Cap May, New Jersey and designated the Alameda base as a support center. With the Coast Guard base's new function, the Coast Guard renamed the island Coast Guard Island.
