USCGC Winnebago off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii.

1970

The USCGC Winnebago was the second of 13 Owasco Class cutters built for the Coast Guard. The Winnebago was named in honor of the Winnebago Tribe who lived in Wisconsin and was commissioned in June 1945. The cutter served briefly as a patrol gunboat in the last month of World War Two. After the war the Winnebago was stripped of her main armament and began her peacetime duties. Every other month the Winnebago would be positioned halfway between Midway Atoll and Japan to provide radio checks to passing airlines and assistance to mechant ships in distress. The Winnebago also provided the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with daily temperatures and wind currents.
