Japan's
Shogunate selected Yokosuka as the site for Japan's first modern naval
base. The French engineer Léonce Verney was hired to oversee the base's
construction in 1865. In the early 20th century, Yokosuka became the
homeport to the Imperial Japanese Navy's 1st Fleet. During World War
Two, Yokosuka naval base was only bombed once with very little damage
to the base's assets. After Japan surrendered in August 1945, the
United States Navy took over the base and to this day, manages the
base's facilities which service the United States Seventh Fleet and
United States Coast Guard ships.
