The
graving drydocks in Yokosuka, Japan are part of the naval base that has
been managed by the United States Navy since 1945. The narrow basin is
filled with water and then opens its gates allowing a ship to
enter. The gates are closed and the water is pumped out, leaving the
vessel supported on blocks. When the work on the ship is finished,
water is allowed to re-enter the basin and the drydock gates are opened
to allow the ship a safe exit. After completing a double Ocean
Station Victor, the USCGC Winnebago headed to Yokosuka for a 1-month overhaul in drydock. In this picture, the drydock gates can be seen behind the Winnebago.
