USCGC Winnebago transfering a crewman to another ship.

1970

When the USCGC Winnebago's maintenance was complete in Yokosuka, Japan, she headed back out to Ocean Station Victor halfway between Midway Atoll and Japan. The Winnebago relieved the USCGC Mellon on station by highlining mail and a crewman who had urgent business to attend in Hawaii. This photograph was taken by a coastguardsman onboard the Mellon. The picture shows the Winnebago engaged in transferring a crewman to the Mellon. Underneath the Winnebago's small boat is Ron Marlett who is hidden by the turbulent water between the two ships. Transferring  a crewman on the bosun's chair was very dangerous and the two ships must stay 140 feet apart  with a constant speed of 12 knots.
