When Ron Marlett saw Ernst Kirchner’s 1913 portrait of Erna Schilling, he immediately thought of how much fun it would be to include himself in the painting. Ron wanted to create a scene that illustrated a moment in a dinner date that wasn’t working out between two very different people. Ron painted himself laughing at his own joke while Erna is completely bored and counting the seconds until she can end the date and go home. When Ron included himself in the painting, he had to readjust the painting’s elements in order to reestablish the composition’s balance.
