Portrait of Ensign Bafflestir by Ron Marlett.

1971

During the last three years of Ron Marlett's enlistment with the Coast Guard, he worked in the Public Relations Office. One of Ron's duties was to draw a cartoon strip called Ensign Bafflestir for the 14th Coast Guard District's news magazine. The monthly cartoon became very popular within the Coast Guard. Ron drew this portrait of Ensign Bafflestir which was meant to be a parady to Lemuel Francis Abbott's painting Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson. In the portrait's background is the USCGC WInnebago, and in the foreground is the addition of a hobby table. You can read more about Ensign Bafflestir at Wikipedia
