Ron Marlett
oversaw his nephew Alexander Newhall build the 1/250 scale Roman
Warship by Academy Models. Ron recommended that the scale of the model
should be changed to 1/72 so that the anchor, ladders, oars, and rigging would
be the appropriate sizes. The bow ornament and bowsprit were removed so that
the model would represent an 80-foot patrol boat. Ron painted eyes on the bow
so that the model would accurately represent the Roman navy's painting scheme.
Roman sailors believed that painting eyes on their ships would allow their
ships to see and avoid hazards at night and in fog.
