The USCGC Winnebago off the coast of Hawaii.

1970

The USCGC Winnebago was named in honor of the Winnebago people of Wisconsin and was launched in 1945. The Winnebago served briefly in World War II as a convoy escort. After the war, the Winnebago was stripped of her main armament and began her peace time duties. Every other month the Winnebago would be positioned between Midway Atoll and Japan to provide radio checks for passing airliners and assistance for merchant ships in distress. The Winnebago also provided the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with daily temperatures and wind currents.
